Booking Lessons

Lesson rate at my home studio (in the Main Street and Danforth Avenue area in East York) is $50/hour, i.e.:

30-minute lesson: $25.00/lesson
45-minute lesson: $37.50/lesson
60-minute lesson: $50.00/lesson

No HST is collected, as music lessons are tax exempt in Ontario. Lessons are booked in a block of four lessons. Your time slot is guaranteed as long as you continue to book lessons. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please contact me at least 24 hours prior. Students are asked not to reschedule or cancel more than four times per calendar year. Contrary to what people believes, lessons are booked well in advance, and I cannot simply just “teach someone else” and expect to recover lost income from a cancelled a lesson.

Lessons at Your Home

I may be able to travel to your home for lessons in the following areas if we can agree on a schedule:

  • East York
  • Downtown Toronto
  • Scarborough
  • North York
  • Markham
  • Thornhill
  • Richmond Hill

For lessons away from my studio, I charge additional fees on an individual basis based on distance from my studio, accessibility by public transit or car, and travel time required.

Before you sign up for lessons, we will start with a free consultation session. It’s a chance for us to know each other. It usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes. During this time, I show my potential students something about the violin, what it looks like up close, the different parts of the instrument, how it’s made, etc. Then I usually do a short demonstration to show them what they’ll be able to play after a few months of lessons. I’ll also play for them some fancy short pieces that I can do after many years of hard work. The consultation session is also when I find out what kind of music you’re interested in, what you’re hoping to get out of the lessons. What kind of music do you like? Do you want to learn more about classical music? Join an orchestra? Be a soloist? Do you want to “jam” with other musicians? Form a band? (Yes, there are violins in some bands too!) Just want to have fun at gatherings with friends and family? You’ll also have lots of time to ask me any questions so that you can decide whether the violin or viola is the right instrument for you, and whether I’m the right teacher for teaching you how to play it.
